The Daily Rupee, from The IndiaPay Times satire desk. This is satire.

₹94.47PLANO, TX. A first-year H1B employee bought an annual membership at a large warehouse store on Saturday and described it to his mother as “my first investment,” then spent the afternoon trying to recover the fee through a rotisserie chicken, witnesses confirmed.
“The membership pays for itself,” said the employee, 24, standing in aisle 9 with a cart holding one chicken, a 20-pound bag of rice, and a pallet of paper towels he did not remember choosing. “Basically I am already in profit. Next year I will upgrade.”
His first paycheck arrived Friday. According to a roommate, he spent that evening studying the gap between the number in his offer letter and the number in his bank account, then announced he was “done looking at it and ready to buy in bulk.”
Shoppers described a methodical operation. The employee used his phone calculator to compare the per-unit price of every item, including a single canvas tote bag, which has no units. He also ate lunch entirely from the free sample stations, completing eleven stops, each of which he logged as “savings.” At one point he converted a price to rupees out loud, then was gently told by a stranger holding a toothpick of cheese that this is not how it starts.
At 1:10 PM he called his mother from the parking lot and sent a photo of the rice bag. She asked whether the membership card comes with a second card for a spouse, and whether he had anyone in mind to put on it. She then mentioned that Sharma Ji’s son holds memberships at two competing warehouse stores, though no one in the family has ever seen him in either.
“The first ninety days are about justifying the card,” said a senior researcher at an institute nobody could name. “The cart becomes a form of self-reassurance with wheels. By month four, the member has stopped calculating and started buying a kayak.”
At checkout, the employee reportedly paid with the confidence of a man who had read the receipt in advance. He loaded the car, placed the rice in the passenger seat, and, after a pause, buckled it in.
The rice, family members later confirmed, was the same brand his mother has bought for thirty years. He sent a second photo home with one word: “Settled.”
She replied within a minute with a forwarded article on the benefits of cooking rice in a pressure cooker, a device he does not own and which she said she would mail.
The chicken, sources said, broke even by Tuesday. The paper towels are expected to last until his green card.
Not satire: your first US paycheck will look smaller than your offer letter, and here is where the difference actually goes. Our guide, The H1B Worker’s First Paycheck: Where Does the Money Go?, has the real numbers.
