The Daily Rupee, from The IndiaPay Times satire desk. This is satire.

₹95.22SHARJAH, UAE. A 41-member family WhatsApp group ended an eleven-day dispute over a December wedding budget on Tuesday after one member restated every line item in dirhams, a currency no one in the group had previously used to argue, participants confirmed.
The dispute began when relatives in New Jersey and Texas quoted costs in dollars, while relatives in Pune quoted the same costs in rupees. Each side concluded the other was rounding in its own favor.
“Four thousand dollars for decoration is nothing,” an uncle in Edison wrote on day three. Four minutes later he added, “In rupees it is a small flat. Who approved this?” Nobody replied, because he had approved it.
The Pune side responded with a message about flowers. “Five lakh for flowers, only flowers,” an aunt wrote, “and they will be dead by Sunday.” She followed with a photograph of a marigold.
On day six, the bride’s mother posted a good-morning image at 4:12 AM IST and asked whether everything was fine. She also asked when a certain nephew in Dallas was planning to get married himself. The budget was not mentioned.
The breakthrough came from Vijay, a cousin in Sharjah who has not missed a monthly transfer home in 15 years. He posted a single message listing the full budget in dirhams, rounded to the nearest hundred, with no commentary.
Within an hour, witnesses said, both sides stopped converting in their heads. The Edison uncle opened a calculator app, looked at it, and closed it. The Pune aunt asked what a dirham is “in gold,” then declined to hear the answer. Nobody could tell whether the wedding was cheap or expensive, and the group agreed this was the fairest outcome available.
A motion to price all future family events in dirhams passed with 29 thumbs-up reactions, 11 silent members, and one six-minute voice note that did not address the motion.
“A neutral third currency removes the feeling of being cheated and replaces it with the feeling of being confused, which families find more restful,” said a senior researcher at an institute nobody could name.
Vijay later disclosed, in a reply to a different thread, that he had paid his full share in September. Nobody had noticed, because he never mentions it.
At press time, the group had moved on to the question of who would carry the sweets through customs.
Not satire: if you want to see what an Indian wedding actually costs, line by line, we priced one. Our guide, Guddu’s Dad Is Getting Married Again. We Priced the Wedding., has the real numbers.
