PLANO, TX. A software engineer came home from work Thursday to find his kitchen fully reorganized by his visiting parents, who completed the job in one afternoon and, witnesses said, were only getting started.

“Everything is now by frequency of use,” said the mother, standing beside a shelf she called “the front line.” The shelf holds salt, one steel container, and a roll of masking tape. The coffee maker has been moved above the refrigerator, which she described as “the guest room for things we do not need daily.”

The son said he discovered the changes the way most residents do, by opening a drawer and finding something else. “I looked for a spatula for eleven minutes,” he said. “It was in the Drawer of Small Items, next to the rubber bands. I was not told.”

The parents arrived three weeks ago for Diwali on a ticket that listed the return date as “six months, flexible.” Since then, the stove has been wiped daily, the pressure cooker has been “rested” on its own shelf, and the dishwasher, according to the father, “is just a cupboard that is wet.”

The father has meanwhile opened a parallel audit. On Tuesday he left an envelope in the cutlery drawer marked “Electricity, my share,” despite having used the home’s power chiefly to charge one phone and demonstrate an air fryer. On Wednesday, after learning to use a peer-to-peer payment app, he sent his son four dollars with the note “for chai, kindly acknowledge,” then called from the next room to confirm receipt.

The mother said the changes were modest. “Sharma Ji’s son has a separate drawer for guests’ spices,” she said. “I am only saying. I am not comparing.”

A senior researcher at an institute nobody could name said visiting parents typically reorganize in three phases: arrival, audit, and alphabetization. “By week four, the host no longer owns a kitchen,” he said. “He holds a lease on one.”

At press time, the son said he would restore everything to its original layout the day his parents fly home. He then said he would probably do it the following weekend. After a pause, he added quietly that the spice shelf, in fairness, does make sense, and that the house is going to be very quiet and very easy to find things in.

Not satire: if your parents wire money and you tap a payment app, here is how the two generations really handle money across borders. Our guide, NRI Money Habits Generations: My Dad Wires Money, I Venmo My Roommate, has the real numbers.
