PLANO, TX. A software manager held a one-gram gold coin up to his laptop camera for nearly four minutes on Thursday evening while his mother in Pune asked him to move closer to the lamp, household sources confirmed.

“Your light is too yellow,” said the mother, who had begun her day at 4:07 AM India time by forwarding him a Dhanteras reminder, a video about ginger water, and a question about whether he had “thought about anything.” “Gold should look like gold. This is looking like a button.”

The son, 34, said he spent two weeks comparing sellers across eleven browser tabs, two of which were the same seller. He chose the coin after the family WhatsApp group voted 4 to 3 in favor of gold over utensils, with two members abstaining because they “only came for the festival photos.” A cousin in Sharjah reportedly settled his own purchase with a single voice note on Tuesday and declined further comment.

The mother then issued conditions. The coin must stay in its sealed card. The receipt must be photographed twice, once flat and once “with your face also in it.” The coin must go in a locker.

“I said it is a drawer,” the son said. “She asked which drawer. I said socks. There was a silence I will remember.”

A neighbor known locally for announcing prices in rupees heard the call through an open window and offered his own review. “In rupees it sounds very big,” he said. “In grams it is a rounding error. But a very emotional rounding error.”

The son confirmed he had already moved the coin to a different sock.

A senior researcher at an institute nobody could name said the episode follows a well-documented pattern. “The festival purchase is chosen by the mother, researched by the son, and verified by the mother again, on video, in better light,” the researcher said. “It is the only asset with a three-step approval process and no committee.”

At 6:52 PM Central, the mother approved the coin. Witnesses said she then stopped discussing it entirely. She asked whether he was eating properly, whether the dal visible behind him was from this week, and whether he had “thought about anything” yet.

She asked him to stay on the call while she finished her tea. The coin, sources said, remained in the frame for the rest of the conversation, though by then nobody was looking at it.
