PLANO, TX. A local software engineer refreshed his green card case status page 41 times on Saturday morning, read the same sentence he has read for years, and then ordered a sofa he described as “temporary,” neighbors confirmed.

“Nothing has changed,” said Suresh, holding his phone at arm’s length like a thermometer. “But the page loaded very fast today. I am taking that as a sign.”

Since his case began, Suresh has outlasted three phones and two managers, and has replaced one sofa. The replacement, he says, is also temporary.

Friends say the wait has reshaped his household in small ways. The “Any news?” message in his family WhatsApp group is answered so often with “No news” that he has saved the reply as a keyboard shortcut. His fixed deposit in India has auto-renewed so many times that he now refers to it as “the pet.” His cousin in Sharjah, who has never waited for anything longer than a transfer to clear, called to say the whole plan sounded “very relaxed.”

Sharma Ji’s son, who is understood to have sorted all of this years ago, could not be reached for comment, which neighbors said is consistent.

“Households in this situation tend to follow a pattern,” said a senior researcher at an institute nobody could name, who asked to be identified only as Priya. “We call it the Sofa Index. It begins with a folding chair, moves to a loveseat, and ends with a sectional that everyone insists is temporary. The furniture is the only part of the process that moves forward.”

Suresh’s weekend routine, observed over several hours, consists of refreshing the page, closing it, opening it again “just to check the check,” and telling his mother in Pune that he will definitely move home in two years. “Maximum,” he said. “After the card.”

His mother has heard this timeline, in various forms, since the sofa before the sofa. Each time, she says she will keep his room ready.

According to a cousin, she has since repainted it twice and bought a sofa for it. She describes it as temporary.
