₹94.91SHARJAH, UAE. A man who has not missed a monthly transfer home in 15 years ended a nine-day family group debate on Sunday with a single voice note lasting 11 seconds, relatives confirmed.
The debate began when a cousin in Plano, Texas, in his first year on an H1B visa, posted a screenshot comparing a US high-yield savings account with an NRE fixed deposit and asked the group, “Which is better, honestly?” The post drew 61 replies. Forty of them came from people who hold neither.
“Both are fine,” the Sharjah cousin said in the voice note, according to a transcript typed out by an aunt. “Send on the first. Eat dinner.”
The group then went quiet for 40 minutes, its longest silence since a distant relative’s engagement photo was posted with the wrong person cropped out.
The Plano cousin’s spreadsheet, shared earlier in the thread, had 14 tabs, including one titled “If Rupee Does Something.” The Sharjah cousin’s system is one calendar reminder named “Send,” set to repeat monthly since 2011. It has survived four phones and, by his own account, one factory reset he does not discuss.
At 4:12 AM IST, the Plano cousin’s mother forwarded the group a graphic reading “Money Grows Like Tulsi, Water It Daily,” source unknown, followed by a question about when her son plans to settle down. One aunt said Sharma Ji’s son has “a better rate,” but he did not respond in the group, as is his custom.
A senior researcher at an institute nobody could name said the Sharjah approach was “either discipline or a very good alarm,” and declined to say which. The researcher called the spreadsheet’s 14th tab, “Emotional Factors,” “the only one with real data.”
Asked about his method, the Sharjah cousin said he does not think of the transfer as a decision. On the second of each month, his mother calls. She asks, “Did it reach?” He says yes. She tells him to eat properly. The call lasts under a minute.
“I have never checked the rate on that call,” he said.
Not satire: if your family group is also arguing about an NRE fixed deposit versus a US savings account, here is how the comparison actually works. Our guide, The 7% NRE FD Arbitrage: Are You Leaving Money On The Table?, has the real numbers.
